Dear Lockhart Family and Friends,
Michele and I are glad to return from our trip to Anaheim, California. While there, we attended the annual Southern Baptist Convention.
During the convention, Southern Baptists elected a new president, Bart Barber, the pastor of a rural church in Farmersville, Texas. Barber is a staunch conservative who welcomes a ban on abortions, opposes critical race theory, and believes that only men should be ordained. Southern Baptists also addressed the troubling issue of sexual abuse within the Southern Baptist Church. In response, Southern Baptists will create a “sexual abuse task force” to formulate a national strategy, provide training for churches in abuse prevention, and create a convention-wide database of sexual offenders previously associated with Southern Baptist churches. I think this is a positive step.
Everything else in the convention was more positive. Attendance at Southern Baptist seminaries is on the rise, and giving to the Cooperative Program for global missions has also increased. Michele and I are glad we could participate in the decision-making process.
On a different note, we complete our sermon series this Sunday, “Jesus in Genesis.” Since people have enjoyed this series, our new series is “Jesus in Exodus.” Here are the titles of our sermons through July.
Sunday, July 3 – Genesis 32:22-32 – “Wrestling Match with God at Peniel.”
Sunday, July 10 – Exodus 3:1-15 – “Jesus – the Great I AM.”
Sunday, July 17 – Exodus 17 – “Jesus – Rock of Ages & Jehovah Nissi”
Sunday, July 24 – Exodus 23:20-25 – “Jesus as the Angel of the Lord.”
Sunday, July 31 – Exodus 33:7-11 – “Jesus as the Face of God.”
Monday is the Fourth of July, and Sunday is part of Independence Day weekend, so we will celebrate our nation's birthday by singing patriotic hymns and praying for our country. I hope that you can come and join us in worship!
Blessings to you all!
Pastor Rob
